3 Mistakes New Strategy Game Players Always Make

Congratulations to any newcomer to the strategy game genre, if you're a recent player. These are fun and very difficult, and actually sometimes frustrating to play, games of strategy. Even when you're playing Age of Empires IV, Civilization VI, or StarCraft II, every new player makes mistakes as they start out.

That is Normal!

I can still recall my first time game of strategy. I was wasting all my resources on random units, with no plan. 5 minutes later, another player attacked my base and destroyed me completely. At this time, I discovered that strategy games aren't just about clicking quickly. They're on the subject of clever brainpower

If you are having trouble improving, don't fret. Let's take a look at the top 10 most frequent mistakes that new strategy game players make and how you can avoid them in this article.

1.Focusing Only on Attack

Newbies tend to believe that they must attack all the time. Plans not made, sending units in without planning.

However, attacking is not the only thing that's involved in a game of strategy. All three aspects: defence, economy, and timing are of equal importance.

It is better to wait for the right time than to be hasty. When to fight and when to wait is a lesson learned by good players.

Simple Tip :

Prior to attack, ask yourself:

  • Is there enough of a unit?

  • What about protection of bases?

  • What if the attack is unsuccessful?

These are the questions that will prove to be a lifesaver to your game.

 2.Ignoring Resource Management

This is one of the mistakes people make.

New players often waste their resources. They forget to pick them up. All of a sudden they have no gold, wood, energy or food left.
When you play strategy games resources are the important thing. Without resources you cannot build armies. Make your base better.
Resources are, like the money you get from your job. If you spend all your money in one day the rest of the month is going to be tough.

Simple Tip :

Always balance:

  • Spending
  • Saving
  • Expanding your economy

A strong economy usually wins long games.

3.Building Too Many Random Units
Did this a lot when I first started.

Many new players make all kinds of units because they think it looks cool.. Most of the time these random armies do not do well against players who have a plan.

Players who are good, at strategy make units that serve a purpose. They build units with a purpose, like the strategy players do with their units.

For example:
  • Fast units are good for scouting.
  • Heavy units are good for defence.
  • Long-range units are good for support.
Every unit needs a role
Simple Tip :
  • Learn which units work together.
  • Don't produce everything. Focus, on units that work best together.
